LOVE THE WORLD.to love or not to love?that is the question.so, i found myself twice being embroiled in the middle of rapid firing and discussions whether the name of the bar was dubious and deserve raised eyebrows. but as usual, i didn't say a thing, just sitting there and taking in what everyone said, so i could formulate my own argument/opinion. if you know me, i'm a much better writer than a speaker. so no no to debating. some say its a matter of opinion, whether you think the "world" means "ways of this world" or "people of this world". i dont really know what to say now but,
back to the question: didn't God tell us not to love the world? if yes, then why on earth would a christian bar name itself LOVETHEWORLD?
first of all, yup it is indeed true that the phrase "do not love the world" is in the Bible.
1 john 2:15, 16
do not love the world or anything in the world. if anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
but i beg us to look deeper. yes, it is explicit indeed. do not love the world. but like so many other things in the Bible, you cannot just take a sentence and keep harping on it like its the entire Bible. there are thousands other verses which we must look at, and above all, know the author of the Bible more than the Bible itself. jesus filled His days telling parables. there is so much more to it! don't get stuck at the crossroads of this debate and think its just a matter of opinion.. because i think if we dont find an answer for ourselves, we'll start respecting everyone's opinion and keep toeing the line between what is really right and wrong.
know the context in which 1 john was written.
"my dear children, i write this to you so that you will not sin". perhaps the people were sinning lots? i'm not a bible scholar i dont know.
but take the verse in its context and put it in this context. put it in the context of what's happening today. of what the bar aims to do. it aims to enlarge the christian community through music. it creates a non-threatening platform for christians to do soft evangelism. it opens a new platform for people who like bars, like alcohol, but can't reconcile it with christianity. why? why can't people reconcile alcohol with christianity? those who can't, are they living a double life? i'd much rather reconcile it and live a single life.
there are many interesting verses about love & the world.
john 3:16
for God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son.......
mark 16:15
go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.
God so loved the world. and we should be like God. then we should love the world right?
get what i mean? just comparing verses to verses is not enough. its much better to know God, and know Him and His ways deep enough to not let further debates leave you open-ended and confused, and resign to a conclusion that we think we can live by.
and in conclusion i would like to give you this verse.
though i am free and belong to no man, i make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. to the jews i became like a jew, to win the jews. to those not having the law i became like one not having the law (though i am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law), so as to win those not having the law.
to the weak i became weak, to win the weak. i have become all things to all men so that by all possible means i might save some. i do all this for the sake of the gospel, that i may share in its blessings.pick up your bible and read 1 cor 9:19-27.
i dare you
